First Day of Kindergarten Linky Party

Okay, all you marvelous Kindergarten teachers out there; I am calling on you for help!  I still have a whole month before school starts (and most of that will be spent setting up my new classroom) but I can't stop wondering about those first few weeks of K, especially the very first day.  So If you have a post on your blog about your first day of kindergarten plans then this party is for you!  If you don't have a post yet, take the time to write it all down and share with the rest of us.  I can't wait to read all of your fantastic ideas!

I know it is most common for the creator of a linky party to post her own thoughts and ideas but I haven't taught K for YEARS so I honestly have no idea what my plans will look like for the first few days!  That's why I am creating this party.  I have also linked up with the Teaching Blog Addict's Ultimate Linky Party. Be sure to copy the image above at the top of your post and link it back to this post so others can join in.  Let's see how many link-ups we can get!

This is such a great idea. That first day is always crazy. Last year it was also our first time to have breakfast in the classroom. I cannot even begin to tell you how CRAY CRAY that was!

I have about 20 different puzzles. They are very simple with about only 8 pieces per puzzle. I usually have my kiddos do those. When they finish, they trade it in and get a new one. You can buy a set of 4 puzzles at Wal-Mart and they have lots of different sets.

The first day of K is crazy - EVERY YEAR. =) My main goal is to be sure how EVERY child will go home that afternoon...and to be sure I have the same number at the end of the day that I started with! hahaha! Seriously, as soon as parents meet you to drop off their child have them fill out a quick info sheet - name, address, phone # (all of them) and how that child will go home THAT day (1st day) and EVERY day after that. Then send home the long info sheet the 1st day of school. You gotta have a way to contact the parents & how the child is getting home!
Other than that, I leave crayons & paper on each table for students to draw & color - nothing messy & something very simple to do while you are greeting parents. I tell parents to unpack supplies into crates or grocery bags. I have students put their backpacks on the back of the chairs - we will set up routines after we start!
Once most children have arrived, begin your day! Bring everyone together on the carpet, intro yourself, explain how we come into the classroom and then start practicing....
I could go on and on...sorry. You will need to practice routines for WEEKS! That might be hard to comprehend, but you will need to model A LOT, then repeat for students who need it, and intro to new students enrolling. If routines start falling apart, STOP and model it AGAIN, then PRACTICE! =) You will be so much happier in the end!
Okay..I'm done. If anyone else wants to chat or want more ideas, email me!

Great Idea for a linky party! If I have time, I will link up soon. I see that this is your first year teaching kindergarten and you are new to blogging.

I have taught kindergarten for 10 years, but am new to blogging. If you get a chance, check out my blog and grab a few freebies.

I love your site. I tried to sign up my email account and the blogger says you don't have the ability to do that. I am a computer dweeb, so don't know what to do. Are you able to help me?

I just connected with your blog. I love it. I will be teaching kindergarten for the first time ever...and I am a veteran teacher with enough years to retire but just can't bring myself to do it yet. I taught first grade for 13 years and now my boss is moving me to kindergarten. I am petrified. I taught prek for 2 years and loved it, once I got used to 4 year old habits. I am glad that I found your blog. I don't have a blog but maybe its time to experiment there too.
